Chiapas MuralWe walked around the corner from the famous storefront to view the mural painted on the outer side wall of the City Lights Bookstore building, which sits on Jack Kerouac Alley. In 1988 Ferlinghetti spearheaded a successful movement to change twelve San Francisco Street names to honor great San Francisco writers.

This mural is a replica of a Mexican mural burned down by opponents of the indigenous people's rights movement in Chiapas. In protest, artists around the world pledged themselves to reproduce the mural everywhere. Ferlinghetti offered the side of his famed store for the San Francisco site. Local Mission district artists contributed their artistry to create the beautiful mural and incorporated the unique features of the wall into the original mural design.
