Access to the Internet with a computer.

An email address where you can receive mail. Yahoo,
Hotmail, Netscape are among the many companies offering free mail
service, if you do not already have an address. The ListServ that
we use will require that all your mail be sent from or sent to one
address.

Browsing software, which you already have if you
are looking at this page. If possible, you will want to have more
than one browser, so that you can check your pages with both the Microsoft
Explorer and Netscape, for example. The instructor will also be viewing
your work with Opera and a text-based browser such as Lynx. Web pages
often display quite differently on the various browsers.

A web site. If your internet service provider does
not give you web space with your email account, free web space is
available from Webprovider,
Geocities,
Xoom and Angelfire.
You can also check this list
of servers offering free web space. One of the first assignments
will be to set up a site and send the URL address to the instructors.

You are welcome to use any basic introduction to html that appeals
to you for this class. I have suggested some good texts to consider
on the "Readings" page. If you cannot
afford a book, all of the information is available on the web through
the recommended links. However, it is very difficult to learn without
having some reference text in print.
You will not need:

Exepensive web authoring programs such as FrontPage, PageMill, Dreamweaver,
GoLive, nor the free programs such as Netscape Composer. In this class
you will code your pages from scratch. Later we will evaluate these
web authoring programs, but it is not necessary to have them.
